RYA Marine Radio Short Range Certificate

An on-line course followed by an oral assessment

The RYA Marine Radio Short Range Certificate (SRC) is the minimum qualification required to operate marine VHF radio equippment on a UK flagged vessels and recognised Worldwide. It is also a requirement for a skipper willing to charter a vessel in various countries.It is obained by successfully completing an SRC exam conducted at an RYA Recognised Training Centre.

The SRC course may be taken in a classroom or online through an RYA Recognised Training Centre. There is no age limit for taking the SRC course although exam candidates must be 16 years old on the day of the exam.

Course subjects include: routine operation of marine VHF radio including Digital Selective Calling, the correct VHF channels (frequencies) to be used for each type of communication, distress, emergency and medical assistance procedures, ship to shore communication, practical use of Marine VHF DSC radios, Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB), Search and Rescue Transponders (SART).

The Assessment
The assessment is a combination of a written theory test and practical assessment in the use of Marine VHF DSC radios. Candidates must be 16 years or older on the day of exam.

How we run the course and assessment at Sailpro School of Yachting

At Sailpro school of Yachting, we are giving you the opportunity to access the RYA SRC course on-line, which is an excellent, highly prized course especially designed by the RYA to allow you to study at home at your own pace. This opportunity also allows you to combine other RYA courses, practical or shore based with obtaining your radio certificate without an additional day in a classroom. After completing the on-line course you will be sitting an assessment with our Assessor in our classroom in YKP Warsaw- Port Warsaw in Warsaw, Poland. You will arrange the date of your assessment separately.

Please contact the school on info@sailproschoolofyachting to receive your Booking agreement and your very own access to the RYA online platform to complete the course. You will also receive or collect either a paper or digital copy of the RYA SRC handbook to study prior to the course and assessment. You will also have access to your tutor during your online course in case there are issues that need clarification.

RYA SRC & Exam

Online

When you register for the course with us online, you will be issued with a login, a password and a link to the course on the RYA interactive website. It is suitable for Windows and Mac. The course takes between 4-10 hours to complete online. We are just an email or a phone call away to answer any queries you may have while you are working through the course. Once you have completed the course you need to take the classroom based exam, which can be done by contacting us to arrange a suitable time. We provide up to an hour’s extra tuition using our simulators prior to the exam. There is an additional exam fee of £60 made payable to the RYA.

Classroom

If you prefer to attend a classroom course, we run VHF SRC courses, led by an RYA SRC assessor.

The course and assessment is held at YACHT KLUB POLSKI WARSZAWA, PORT WARSZAWA, Wał Miedzeszyński 377, 03-980 Warsaw, Poland

The course is followed by the exam run by a second RYA SRC assessor. There is an additional exam fee of £60 made payable to the RYA.

A full day’s training.
Course materials, including the RYA VHF handbook in paperback format, refreshments.

What’s not  included:
RYA exam fee (currently £70).
